vince-chan asked: i know there are computer malls in wan chai and other places on the island, but where would you go if you were looking to get your good-value-but-not-dodgy tech in hong kong? thanks :)
It’s hard to tell tourists how to spot the good small shops. In general, it’s safer to shop at the big stores such as Broadway, Fortress and Citicall (my favorite of the three). I can also recommend Sky Dragon, which is a small laptop shop in Mong Kok Computer Centre (as featured in my Hong Kong video tour).
One trick you should watch out for is that some shops are known to repackage ex-demo laptops as brand new ones. It’s common for shops to ask you to come back in a bit while they retrieve the laptop from the warehouse — this is when you should insist that you stay around to keep an eye on things. The good shops should only ask for your money after they’ve retrieved the product, anyway.
Have fun in Hong Kong, if you’re going there soon.
PS: I’ve always preferred the Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok computer malls to Wan Chai’s.
